CES Sport Wheels

Having now ridden with the CES Sport wheels for over 4000 miles, I thought now was the best time to give my verdict on them.

I purchased 38mm disc rims with custom logos and as tubeless compatible.

Cost £675

They took approx 6 weeks to be delivered which was just in time for the frame from VO2.

CES were able to match the same colour on the logos as I was having my bike finished which was great.

When the rims turned up, I had them checked and they were true. I was really impressed with how they looked and the NovaTec hubs were really smooth.

I couldn't get the Schwalbe Marathon One tyres on to the rims. So I decided to go for Continental GP4000s however, having a few punctures coming in to the Spring, I chose to visit my local cycle shop and opted to upgrade the wheels to tubeless Pirelli tyres. 

What a mistake!

My first ride was 20 miles to work, within 5 miles I had already heard the escape of air as I hit a minor pothole. By the time I got to work the tyre was almost flat.

With two quite large slits in the tyre caused by the pothole, I was not impressed with the Pirelli tyres that had cost £80 per wheel to set up.

So, I popped the wheel in to another bike shop (local to work) where there was nothing that could be done to save the 24 hour old Pirelli. 

I asked the shop to put on a Mavik tyre which they did (another £80 later)

No issues at all.

Inside the tyre I am using FinishLine Multi-Sealant which I saw at IceBike last year. It's probably one of the best fluids available. FinishLine claim it doesn't harden inside the tyre which means you don't have to replace it as often as other brands.

The ride is smooth and sounds great. I know the average speed is difficult to measure as my previous bike was a bit heavier than the new one, but on a 65 mile ride, my previous best average was 16mph, new bike, new wheels, my average went up to 18mph.

Somedays I wish I had have opted for 50mm rims. Other days, I am glad I didn't.

The crosswinds do hit these rims a fair bit more than I expected them too, but all in all, they are a great quality Toray T700 carbon for under £700.

These wheels are great value for money. With many options, including depth, tubeless and disc brake options, CES Sport have got it spot on with quality and price.
With no less than 6 models available including their UCI Approved RC Elite range starting at £1250 for the 38mm version up to the RC Elite Rear Disc with a RC 88mm front wheel for TimeTrials at £1800 there are so many possibilities to suit most budgets.
CES Sport have also just become a distributor for Ceramic Speed pulley kits.
